Direct Estimation of Shape from Texture
نویسنده
چکیده
In 12], Witkin proposed a maximum likelihood (ML) estimator of surface orientation based on the observed directional bias of projected texture elements. However, a drawback of this procedure is that the estimate is only deened indirectly in terms of a set of non-linear equations. In this paper we propose an alternative method, which allows an estimate of the surface orientation to be computed directly in a single step from certain simple statistics of the image data. We also show that this direct estimate allows Witkin's ML estimate to be computed to within 0:05 in only two or three iterative steps. The performance of the new estimator is demonstrated experimentally and compared to that of the ML estimator, using both synthetic data and real gray-level images.

Direct Appearance Models
Active appearance model (AAM), which makes ingenious use of both shape and texture constraints, is a powerful tool for face modeling, alignment and facial feature extraction under shape deformations and texture variations. However, as we will show through our analysis and experiments, there exist admissible appearances that are not modeled by AAM and hence cannot be reached by AAM search; also ...
متن کاملShape from Texture through Deformations
This paper is a contribution to the recovery of shape from texture under perspective projection. We regard shape from texture as a statistical estimation problem, the texture being the realization of a stochastic process. There are two minimal conditions in order for the problem to be solvable: the first is a stationarity condition on the texture with respect to the surface; the second is the r...
متن کاملShape from Video: Dense Shape, Texture, Motion and Lighting from Monocular Image Streams
This paper presents a probabilistic framework for robust recovery of dense 3D shape, motion, texture and lighting from monocular image streams. We assume that the object is smooth, Lambertian, illuminated by one distant light source, and subject to smoothly-varying rigid motion. The problem is formulated as a MAP estimation problem in which all shape, motion, noise variances and outlier probabi...

متن کاملShape from Non-homogeneous, Non-stationary, Anisotropic, Perspective Texture
We present a method for Shape-from-Texture in one of its most general forms. Previous Shape-from-Texture papers assume that the texture is constrained by one or more of the following properties: homogeneity, isotropy, stationarity, or viewed orthographically. We make none of these assumptions. We do not presume that the frontal texture is known a priori, or from a known set, or even present in ...
متن کاملShading Into Texture
Shape-from-shading and shape-from-texture methods have the serious drawback that they are applicable only to smooth surfaces, while real surfaces are often rough and crumpled. TO extend such methods to real surfaces we must have a model that also applies to rough surfaces. The fractal surface model [Pentland 831 provides a formalism that is competent to describe such natural 3-D surfaces and, i...
